Mitski Shows Off Composition Chops in New Song, ‘The End’

In her latest song, Mitski takes a break from vocals to let her composition chops shine.

The song, titled ‘The End,’ comes from her upcoming companion soundtrack to the graphic novel This is Where We Fall by Chris Miskiewicz and Vincent Kings. The announcement follows the March release of ‘The Baddy Man,’ another advance cut from the album.

On the new track, the singer-songwriter’s conscious hiatus from distorted guitar on the hit 2018 album, Be the Cowboy, comes to an end. Fans of 2016’s Puberty 2 and 2014’s Bury Me at Makeout Creek will find Mitski’s early style mirrored and reinvented with fuzzed-out strings and dreamy keys.

“It was exciting to make a soundtrack for a comic book,” Mitski said in a press release. “It allowed me to work outside of my usual songwriting form and try to approach it like a score, but without any of the cues that come with working alongside a moving image, which ended up being both freeing and challenging. I hope the end result helps to immerse you in the story!”

Releasing later this month, the graphic novel and soundtrack are now available for pre-order from Z2 Comics.
